School Athletics Carnival 1st September 2017

 
O'Connor Primary School has four factions:    
 
Kanowna
Trafalgar
Fimiston
Ora Banda
 
On the 2nd September children will compete in a Junior (PP to 2) and a Senior (Year 3 to 6) athletics carnival. The Kindy students will participate in special activities throughout the day. Athletics Carnival Parent Information (coming soon)  
 
The events include running races, relays, team games and novelty events. Please see the parent program (coming soon)  for more detail. A Junior team games timetable (coming soon)  is also available. Long Jump, Javelin and the 800 metre races will occur throughout the week prior to the carnival. PrePrimary parent information (coming soon)  .
 
Children in Pre Primary to Year 6 will be bringing home a program the week before the carnival, with their events marked. Please remember we try to stick to times listed, but this is not always possible. 
 
Kindy children who attend school on a Friday will run in a race at 11.20am. Children from Joeys, Kangaroos and Echidnas are welcome to join the other Kindy groups and are asked to meet on the oval at 11am. Parents must remain with their children.
 
While we celebrate achievement and wish the students hoping to qualify for the Interschool Team luck, we also encourage and celebrate having a go and participation. This is a whole school event with many fun games and activities. Parents are encouraged to come and support their children. On the day of the carnival the canteen will be open for parents.

Interschool Athletics 19th September 2017


Information and details will be updated as soon as possible. Please use last year's details (listed below) as guide only.
 

Information from 2016

The events start at 7.30 (Turbo Javelin and Long Jump), with the remaining events commencing at 9.30am approximately. Turbo Javelin and Long Jump competitiors are to meet at Wallace Park at 7.15, while all other competitiors are to come to school as normal. We will catch the bus to the oval as a group. Please return permission forms by 5th September. Team list (subject to change without notice).

Parents are welcome to join us at Wallace Park (parent program) to cheer on their children. More details are included in the parent program coming soon (specific times can not be given - the first running event starts at 9.30am). If you are able to help on the day please contact the school office

 Senior Swimming Carnival - 17th March 2017

 
O'Connor Primary School has four factions:

The Senior Swimming Carnival will be taking place in Week 7. Students of all abilities are encouraged to take part on the day. They will have the option of competing in either the 50m or 25m races (not both) in the morning. In the afternoon all students will participate in the novelty events.
 
Children will need to bring a drink, bathers, towel, goggles and packed lunch. The Cafe will not be serving students during the carnival. A program will be sent home with children for approximate times of races (please note we can not guarantee times).
 
Permission slips will need to be returned by 3rd March.
17th March  Junior Water Fun Day (Year 1 to 3) and Senior Swimming Carnival (Year 4 to 6) 
 
Please return the permission slip to the classroom teacher.  
 
Swimming Carnival Training.
All children in Years 4 - 6 are invited to attend swimming training in preparation for the swimming and interschool carnivals approaching.
Training will be conducted in
  • Week 5-Tuesday 28th of February
  • Week 6 -Tuesday 7th and Thursday 9th March

The training will be held in the mornings from 7.30am to 8.15am. It is parents' responsibility to stay on pool deck during the training and then to organise your child to change and walk to school. Children are encouraged to attend Breakfast Club on these mornings when arriving at school. Breakfast Club from 8am to 8.30am in Block One. Looking forward to seeing you at the pool.

 Interschool Swimming Carnival - 31st March 2017

Selected students who did well in the school swimming carnival are invited to represent the school at the Interschool Swimming Carnival. Mrs Gallagher will lead the team who will compete against other local schools at the Oasis Recreation Centre.

Parents must sign and return the permission slip using the Skoolbag app. Spectators are welcome to cheer on the O'Connor team. Oasis charge a spectator fee, please contact the pool for information. A program of events is provided for parents' information and will be posted as soon as it is received. A copy of the Stroke Technique and Rules is provided for parent information.

The team is announced after the school carnival. Congratulations to the 2017 team.

Reserves will be called upon on the morning if another student is absent. Please fill out the permission form and send your child ready to swim even if they are a reserve. You will be called on the morning, if your child is a reserve and is swimming.  Good luck in the pool everyone.

 Junior Water Fun Day - 17th March 2017

 
Once again this year, students in Years One to Three will participate in the Swimming Carnival by completing a rotation of novelty events. Each year group will go across to the Oasis for an hour in the morning.
Children will need to bring a towel, bathers and goggles, if required. Children will not be eating at the Oasis. Please see the Parent Note for more information - coming soon.
Permission slips need to be returned by 8th March.
 
Children will walk over to Oasis before their year group time and return to school at the conclusion. Teachers will walk the students over, however parents are requested to assist in the changing and walking over to ensure the transition times are smooth. Parents walking over with the school will not be charged entry to the pool by Oasis. All other parents will need to pay the admission costs.
 
Approximate times are:
  • Year 1: 9 -10am
  • Year 2: 10 – 11am
  • Year 3: 11am - 12pm


Year 1 children are encouraged to wear their bathers to school and bring their school clothes to change into afterwards. Children are reminded to be punctual to ensure their participation due to the early timeslot. Late children must come to school first and may not be taken directly to the pool. Recess and lunch will be as normal.
Year 2 and 3 students are asked to wear school uniform and will be given time to change before and after the carnival. Recess times will alter slightly to allow for the carnival. All children will have recess and lunch at school.

Cross Country - Wednesday 28th June 2017


The school cross country is held in the school grounds and is a fun day.  The event is open to all students from Years 2 to 6 and we encourage all students to participate. Year 2, 3 and 4 students run a shortened course: approximately 700m for Yr2 and Yr 3/4 is 1.5km, Year 5/6 students run approximately 2km.   For a downloadable map click here.
 

  
The races will commence at 9.00 sharp and conclude at approximately 12:30pm.Family Picnic Day will follow at 12.45pm

All years will run on the school oval and then out around part of the school perimeter and the Oasis Reserve near the netball courts. Students are asked to wear their faction shirt and enclosed running shoes, they will also need to bring a hat and drink bottle on the day. Parent assistance will be required on the day for job roles such as course marshals, timekeepers and ribbon givers. If you are able to assist on the day, please indicate below, any help would be appreciated.
 
 
TRAINING
From Weeks 7 to 10 training will take place on Wednesday and Friday mornings from 8.10am until 8.25am during Active Club. Week 7 training will be on the school oval only, then in Weeks 9 and 10 students will be running the course outside of school grounds. Permission forms must be returned for students to attend these training sessions.

Parent volunteers are always needed, inparticular safety wardens around the course, place givers and general helpers are needed. Please email Mrs Gallagher if you can help.

Interschool Cross Country 28th July 2017

Children who placed first, second and third will be invited to the Interschool Cross Country. Fourth place are reserve.
The Interschool is held at Centennial Park. Parents are welcome to attend. More information will be available in early Term 3. A

Information from 2016

The Interschool Summer Lightning Carnival will take place in Term 4 Week 2, Wednesday 19th October 2016.

The aim of the carnival is to promote fitness and fun through competitive sports. It is predominantly a Year 6 exclusive carnival and our aim is to maximise participation of the Year 6 students. In some teams a small number of Year 5 students have been invited to join a team to ensure there are enough players.

Students have chosen from and will compete in one of the following sports – cricket, tennis, touch rugby, or teeball. The touch rugby and teeball will be played at the Oasis and the cricket and tennis will be played at Sheppardson Oval. Please ask your child which sport they are participating in or see the list - coming soon  (Please note that the teams may change without notice).  Parent volunteers are required at all sports.

The first games will commence at approximately 9:30am, therefore students will be departing O’Connor at 9am, so students are reminded to arrive punctually at school. The carnival is expected to be completed by 2:00pm and students will be brought back to school. Parent help and involvement is always encouraged at O’Connor Primary School. Due to the high number of student participants, we are seeking assistance where possible.

The Interschool Winter Lightning Carnival will take place in Term 2 Week 9, Tuesday 20th June 2017.

The aim of the carnival is to promote fitness and fun through competitive sports. It is predominantly a Year 6 exclusive carnival and our aim is to maximise participation of the Year 6 students. In some teams a small number of Year 5 students have been invited to join a team to ensure there are enough players. This Year the Year 5s will attend due to the Year 6 camp. A selcetion of invited Year 4 students will also participate.

Students have chosen from and will compete in one of the following sports – AFL, netball, soccer, minkey (hockey) or basketball. The AFL, netball and basketball will be played at the Oasis and the Minkey will be played at the Hockey Stadium. Soccer will be at the Finlayson Complex.
 
Please ask your child which sport they are participating in or see the list - coming soon  (Please note that the teams may change without notice).  Parent volunteers are required at all sports.
